HOW MANGO GOT ITS NAME

Jul 21, 2021

World Mango Day is celebrated on July 22. Get to know how this king of fruits got its name.

Until Vasco Da Gama arrived in Calicut, the mango fruit was not known to Europeans. The Portuguese adopted the Malayalam/Tamil word Maanga. They wrote letters to their British friends. Since there were no typewriters back then and letters were handwritten, it was called mango. Also, most Portuguese words end with o. So that’s how “mango” entered the English vocabulary. India is the world’s biggest producer of mangoes. This king of fruits contains 20 different vitamins and minerals.
